SoBran is seeking an Animal Care Technician II to serve at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
OVERVIEW: Responsible for all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of research animals maintained in the SMU Laboratory Animal Resource Center vivarium. The Animal Care Technician II should be forward thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance performance on this contract.
Understand and follows all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Quality Assurance Standards
Provide food and water to animals following SOPs or approved protocols
Maintain breeding management of mouse and rat colonies
Receive, examine, transfer, identify, and properly house incoming animal shipments according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Perform all clean and dirty cage wash related duties as assigned
Maintain animal caging and support equipment
Sanitize and decontaminate all areas of the facility
Dispose of waste from the facility following appropriate SOPs
Dispose of animal carcasses following SOPs
Assist with the restraint and manipulation of rodents
Understand and follow SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at biohazard safety level 2 containment
Work hours are 7:00 am to 4:00 pm M-F. Weekend and holiday work is required and is based on a rotation schedule. In addition, you may be required to work extra hours during emergency situations.
High school diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree is preferred
Must have a certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher.
4 years of experience
Must complete the required training and receive clearance on the duties of Animal Care Tech II as outlined. Must have the ability to understand and operate sophisticated technological equipment (ventilated caging, autoclaves, washers, BSCs, etc.) and complex management policies for animal care.
