We are currently seeking a Veterinary Technician I to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland (LARC 11).
OVERVIEW: This is a general summary of the responsibilities associated with the position of Veterinary Technician I for SoBran's animal care contracts. This person is expected to have a general familiarity with day-to-day activities in multiple facilities working with multiple species. We expect the Veterinary Technologist I - Float Technician to be forward thinking and able to use their knowledge of basic facility and technical practices to accomplish tasks in a wide array of positions and assignments. They create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on this contract. The Veterinary Technician I must possess strong verbal communication skills. The Veterinary Technician I will assist the Program Management in the efficient allocation of the budget, write and maintain reports and develop and maintain an effective relationship with the Government staff.
This position’s responsibilities include:
1) Understands and follows all SOP’s and Quality Assurance Standards.
2) Performs daily activities of a veterinary technician (duties may include but are not limited to):
Assist veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alert veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems
Administer clinical treatments as directed (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID) to critical and chronic animals
Monitor the health status of in-house animals
Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and/or minor procedures
Collect physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc)
Calculate drug dosages
Identify and communicate signs of abnormal or poor health
Observe and identify abnormal behavior
Maintain accurate documentation and medical records
Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
3) Must be able to lift a maximum of 50lbs; bend, stoop, climb and stand for a prolonged period.
4) Routinely safely handles and properly disposes of hazardous materials (biological, radiological and chemical).
5) Perform any other duties as assigned
Schedule requirements: Duty schedules are set at the discretion of the unit supervisor and/or SoBran Management to meet the requirements of the contract. Shifts typically occur between 6:00 am and 8:30 pm weekdays, and 6 am to 5:30 pm weekends and holidays. In addition, employees may be required to work beyond their scheduled shift or on non-scheduled days when unanticipated or emergency situations arise.
Required Experience: 3-5 years of experience in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species preferred, will consider candidates with comparable experience and length of service in companion animal practice.
Required Education: Employees’ appointed to the position of Veterinary Technician I must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:
An Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology
A Bachelor's degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline
AALAS LAT certification required
