The ideal candidate for this position will be a hands-on, multi-tasking individual who enjoys managing day to day Veterinary Care activities as well as being an integral part of the growth planning for Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary. This person must work creatively with minimal supervision to help to develop and perform the requirements of the position. The requirements of the job are as varied as everyday life. There will routinely be on the spot decisions and changes to accommodate growth and changing situations.
Major areas of Responsibility:
Prepare individualized care plans for all of the senior dogs both at the Sanctuary, GrandPaw's Gardens, and in Forever Foster homes. The total number of dogs currently in our program is nearly 300.
Do all intake and yearly vetting, dental care and minor surgeries.
Understand and carry out the OFSDS philosophies and standards for vet care.
Help to develop a veterinary area at OFSDS in the current location, GrandPaw's Gardens.
Work as part of the OFSDS team, gaining knowledge of all aspects of OFSDS operations.
Maintain a positive and forward thinking attitude as we are constantly striving to improve our capacity and quality of care.
Project a positive and professional self to our volunteers, fosters, staff and visitors. The Staff Veterinarian will be a main contact for our fosters and employees. Must have excellent customer service skills with both dogs and people.
Constantly be thinking about ways to improve or enhance the experience for both dogs and people. OFSDS is currently in a huge growth period and the person in this position will be integral to that growth.
Responsible for the coordination of on-site and off-site vetting.
There is not a fixed schedule for this job, and the Staff Veterinarian is expected to be on-call for emergencies. The Staff Veterinarian will work a minimum of 40 hours a week. This is a salaried position.
Candidate must be willing to participate in a one week, unpaid, working interview/evaluation. OFSDS will pay for any travel expenses associated with this evaluation.
1. Must be a licensed veterinarian with at least two years of clinical experience. 2. The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to work with senior dogs and must be willing to continue to learn about senior dog specific ailments while employed at OFSDS. 3. Proven customer service skills and strong interpersonal communication skills required. 4. Must be able to handle “whatever comes at you” 5. Must be computer literate. 6. Must have an unrestricted driver’s license and be willing to drive as required in the Middle Tennessee area. If you use your vehicle, mileage will be reimbursed at the current recommended rates.
1. Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, up to 8 hours per day. 2. Lifting up to 40 lbs. without assistance. 3. Bending, rotating, and reaching conducive to a kennel environment 4. Must be able to work in a sometimes unpleasant environment, with strong odors and offensive waste products as would be typical of any kennel or animal area

Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary is located in Mount Juliet, TN, 1/2 hour east of Nashville. We are currently caring for approximately 90 dogs at our sanctuary and 180 in Forever Foster homes within 100 miles of Mount Juliet TN.
