The Department of Population Health and Pathobiology (PHP) at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is committed to the development of a multidisciplinary flagship program in Poultry Health in recognition of the critical role played by veterinary medicine in addressing global challenges related to food animal production, food security, zoonotic diseases, animal welfare and sustainability, and global and public health. To help us further this objective, we invite candidates to apply to our Assistant or Associate Professor of Poultry Pathogenesis position. The right candidate must have expertise in the study of infectious diseases (bacterial, viral or parasitic) related to the production, sustainability and efficiency of poultry production. This expertise is expected to complement or expand existing poultry and production-related research areas at NC State, and the department in particular, that includes but is not limited to musculoskeletal disease, antimicrobial resistance, emerging/reemerging viral diseases, parasitic diseases and in particular coccidiosis, gut health, and host immune response. While an independent research program is required, the candidate is expected to engage in collaborative research as appropriate. In addition, expertise in pathology is desirable but not required. The candidate is expected to maintain a responsive working relationship with the poultry industry, with research informed by industry challenges and new knowledge shared with industry to advise of best practices. Additionally, an industry relationship is required for acquisition of sample material for analysis which will be used in resident teaching as well as to advise industry of best practice(s) to mitigate disease. Candidates must have the ability to collect, analyze, and communicate data obtained through observation, questionnaires, and/or sample collection to producers; global collaborations are desired. The successful candidate is expected to work as part of a collaborative team with existing poultry faculty, especially those providing clinical training. The candidate is also expected to contribute to resident, graduate, and professional (DVM) education, to work collaboratively to strengthen relationships between the NC Diagnostic Laboratory (Rollins), the CALS Prestage Poultry Science Department, and the CVM. Excellent opportunities exist within this role to develop research relationships with NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and regionally with Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. Additional opportunities exist for collaboration with the WHO, FAO, and OIE. A collaborative relationship with the Prestage Poultry Department at NC State is expected. This position will provide expertise on poultry diseases and avian pathology (expertise dependent), consult with colleagues and clients in the field and industry, and conduct on-site assessments and clinical disease investigations with other poultry faculty and disciplinary experts. The candidate may also undertake case review and consult with the NC Diagnostic Services Laboratory (Rollins). The candidate will assist in providing training to residents and serve on graduate committees as appropriate. The candidate will also liaise with related industry to address issues important to them. Strong communication, presentation and writing skills are expected. Domestic and international (overseas) travel for research, extension, and educational purposes may be required.
