Kindred Spirits is seeking an administrative assistant/vet tech to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as proven leadership abilities. In addition to administration, we are seeking a friendly, team-oriented candidate to join our team and align with our mission to create a fun and successful work environment.
Our business provides low cost Veterinary care to farm animal sanctuaries. We are in charge of five different sanctuaries and responsible for approximately 1000 farm animals. This number will potentially increase within the next few years.
This position is a salaried full time position, which will regularly have you working 32 hours a week. Work week will be Sunday (half day) through Thursday.
Your primary responsibility will be for the Vet program’s administrative duties however, there will be a percentage of time that will be dedicated towards assisting the veterinarian with procedures if needed and nightly routine animal care/medication administration (resident animals include cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and poultry) Your tasks will involve but are not limited to the following.
Legibly keeping accurate medical records in accordance to program policy.
Transcribing medical records in to veterinary software.
Understand the importance of maintaining a clean and orderly facility.
Handle client's medical questions with confidence and direct to veterinarian when appropriate.
Explain necessary follow-up and care instructions.
Have a basic understanding of usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used drugs and can readily explain them to the clients. You will have reference materials available if needed.
Help maintain an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies.
Perform basic clinical laboratory procedures such as quantitative and qualitative fecal exams, and efficiently set up and potentially analyze for in house lab tests such as blood analysis, and cytology’s, fecal cultures, skin scrapes and prepare specimens to be sent to outside diagnostic laborites.
Maintain legible file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
Be familiar common disease states that can arise on the resident farm and can alert veterinarians when symptoms change or when concerns arise with residents.
You may be asked to help with medical procedures including but not limited to, hoof trimming, administering medications (PO, SQ, IM, IV, IO), restraint and handling of farm animals, placement of IV catheters, non-invasive surgeries and euthanasia.
Each evening you work you will be responsible for securing all residents in their night houses and doing PM medications and medical checks.
You may be asked to help in other areas on occasion.
Technician experience is a bonus however we can provide training to an applicant if deemed qualified in other areas. We are not a fast paced veterinary clinic however there will always be duties to be performed and areas of knowledge to learn. Under the Vet Program of the sanctuary we have one full-time Veterinarian, an Executive Director, who also assists with the day-to-day Veterinary care and responsibilities, and a Vet Tech who is also our lead animal caregiver.
