New Hampshire SPCA (NHSPCA), located in the Seacoast area of New Hampshire, is the oldest and largest animal welfare agency in NH. During this time of continued growth, the NHSPCA has an immediate opening for the position of Staff Veterinarian. The NHSPCA Veterinarian is responsible for the medical care of our shelter residents, as well as, community vaccination clinics and spay/neuter clinics. The NHSPCA Veterinarian is provided with all resources needed to provide the best medical care possible for shelter and community patients. At this time, the NHSPCA is in a period of growth in the community medical care area. We seek a Veterinarian to be a strong leader with vision, experience, strategic insight and the ability to work positively toward the future of the organization. The Staff Veterinarian is expected to work in accordance with the standards and procedures established by the NHSPCA and with the Sheltering License requirements of the NH Department of Agriculture and the State Veterinary Practice Act. To be responsible for continually updating medical and surgical protocols and to oversee the revision and implementation of approved policies and procedures for effective disease control, management and treatment. The Veterinarian is responsible for the medical and surgical care of shelter residents and client owned patients for our community programs. The veterinarian works collaboratively to fulfill our mission, helps develop new programs and bring to fruition the initiatives created in collaboration with board of directors and the leadership team.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Medical Care of In-house and Community Animals
Performs surgical and medical procedures. Ensures that all medical and surgical programs are directed and comply with all regulations. These include internal medical care, in-house and community spay/neuter, low-cost medical care, euthanasia decisions and inventory supply including DEA/controlled drugs.
Assists in the preparation and implementation of a comprehensive health care plan for animals in the shelter and foster care program, including methods of safeguarding the health of animals in the shelter/foster program and prevention of communicable diseases and adequate parasite control measures within budget guidelines.
Examines animals and prepares reports to be used as evidence in cases of animal abuse being investigated by NHSPCA or legal authorities.
Establishes and maintains medical records and drug use logs to standards of veterinary and sheltering practices; ensures that records are in order and complete
Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure.
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited college or university with a New Hampshire Veterinary license. Must currently have or be able to obtain a DEA License to purchase control drugs.
Experience should include five or more years of professional veterinary medical experience. Experience in Animal Welfare preferred. Experience with small animals and barn animals preferred.
Knowledge of and ability to do high volume spay/neuter surgeries and to conduct high quality surgical sterilizations in a fast paced environment.
Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment, in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures. Ability to be flexible, detail oriented and able to prioritize.
Enthusiasm for Shelter Veterinary Medicine is strongly desired.
Self-motivated, well organized, goal orientated, and works effectively under pressure. Team player.
