We need YOU!
Full-time position for a veterinarian with strong interest in surgery, especially orthopedics for a busy three doctor practice in the beautiful Denver Metro. The ideal candidate must be a go-getter that loves people and animals. We are looking for an “out-of-the-ordinary” outgoing leader, a team player with broader responsibilities that can effectively embrace our vision and make us better. See the end of this posting for an example of the OFFER LETTER we want to send to you!
Who We Are
Liberty Animal Hospital is a Full-Service Small Animal Veterinary Hospital located in Westminster, Colorado. We currently have two Doctors on staff and are continuously growing to reach our full capacity and expand our hours to be open 24/7. At Liberty Animal Hospital, we want to positively impact people’s lives while helping their pets and be an inspiration for other generations. We are a strong work ethic and result-based group of stakeholders and operate as one unit where all participants have a leadership mentality. We use the latest advances in diagnostics and surgery. Our hospital is fully equipped with digital dental and DR radiography, In-house laboratory equipments, laparoscopy, rhinoscopy, video-otoscopy as well as advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Work 4.5 days per week to leave plenty of time to enjoy the Colorado outdoors.
Our Core Values
Compassion, Silent, gestural or verbal, is how we connect with others at Liberty. We create a professional and safe work environment with the Respect with which we treat each other. Trust is a central piece of how well we work together as a team and we build it with Integrity. Since we are a group of adults that make decisions on their own with respect to the team objectives, we can’t accomplish our mission if everyone of us isn’t Self-motivated. We shine through the Excellence we provide, not randomly but consistently. The only way we are able to unite and work together to accomplish the same mission is with direct, honest and clear Communication. As such, we set aside our personal wants because It’s not about Me, rather what we all come together to accomplish as one unit.
Who are you?
You are a fit if:
1.You are looking for a company where you will make a significant impact for a very long time as an important and equal team member, not as a simple “worker”.
2.You have compassion for people and animals and will do anything in your power to help them have a positive experience at our hospital.
3.You are respectful to the entire team, and everyone that walks into our doors.
4.You are highly proactive
5.You enjoy meaningful work, a focus on RESULTS. You are details oriented, can manage yourself and work very closely with other Stakeholders (people who are highly committed).
6.You are an expert communicator, you can talk to Doctors, Veterinary nurses, Assistants, and clients clearly, effectively while staying calm in stressful situations.
7.You have significant experience with surgeries and are able to come up with plans A, B and C to fix a complex fracture in the veterinary patient
We could be a good fit for each other. You MUST be highly proactive and assert yourself as an equal team member with everyone else in our team. We see you as a leader, not just a support person. In our company, EVERYONE is a leader in their area of expertise. If you are looking for a highly structured box within which you will find a clear list of tasks to perform, or you don’t want to be proactive and expect someone else to tell you what to do, please do not apply. We don’t see life that way. We need you to be a self-managed adult. Once you learn the job, we want you thinking ahead, making suggestions for how to improve, and asserting yourself as one of many leaders in our company. We have no room for followers – we all lead from our areas of expertise, and we want that from you as well. The ideal candidate has a high sense of urgency, a love for the details, and the desire to figure out processes to make things run smoothly. THESE ARE NOT JUST WORDS IN AN AD – we need you to be these things, and we’re excited that you bring that to our team!
The ideal candidate loves to serve others and make THEM successful - this is what leaders do, and people deeply respect them for that approach to life. They will serve others by helping them wherever there is a need but also help build relationships with pet owners and their pets. This is a position for someone who wants to make meaning, not just money, and have an ongoing impact in the lives of all people we serve directly or indirectly.
They are infectiously positive, which is very different than getting excited about shiny objects or chasing squirrels. They are not easily distracted by a constant stream of “new things” but are very focused on seeing what they can do to help people get from where they are, to where they want to be.
This person lives in a world of abundance with the mindset, “How can I make you successful?” not in a world of scarcity (there is only so much to go around, so I better get mine before I help you get yours).
1- Living Out:
Our Core Values (See above)
Our Vision statement
Preserve human well-being by promoting healthy pets. You don’t just work here, you get out of bed and come to work because you want to preserve human well being by promoting healthy pets. You have to take on this vision and make it your own like everyone at our company. It’s not a nice statement on a wall, but a way we live at work and at home. If you don’t want to make a difference in pet owners lives by taking very good care of their pets, this is not the place for you.
Our Mission statement
We provide compassionate care to pet owners and their beloved pets through quality medicine and surgery in a fulfilling work environment. By doing so, we want to become an inspiration for other generations.
2- The mindset of an “owner”. We are all “Stakeholders” (fully committed and engaged staff), and no matter how many hours you spend with us, you’re as much a part of what we do as anyone. You need to have that mindset – you are an incredibly valuable part of our team and our customers will get to know you and lean on you to help them.
3- The mindset of an Adult – We’re not looking for someone who needs to be told what to do, when to show up, what time recess is, and when they can go home. We’re looking for someone who is a self-managed, self-motivated adult who knows what RESULT we want, and enjoys taking the bull by the horns to get it done, without being watched, managed or directed. There are no managers at Liberty Animal Hospital, and none of us “manage” each other. We all work together in community to get things done, and we need someone who will join us as an equal team member, not as an “underling” or employee/child. Once you are trained, you will be expected to effectively provide medical and surgical care for our patients.
4- Systems and Process Mindset – You will be given a system or not of how to do the various aspects of your job. You need to be able to work with that system, and once you learn it, YOU will decide how to improve your system. YOU WON’T HAVE A MANAGER. We want you to be thinking about how to make things more efficient while still serving our leaders in the best way possible.
5- A Results-Based work ethic – We don’t watch clocks. We all know what result we need to get and are focused on that. When that result is achieved, we go home. And no one decides for us when to do that – we’re all adults who figure it out based on the required result. All our stakeholders will be cross-trained so that everyone can help each other whenever the needs arise. There will be no room for “It’s not my job” mentality.
6- Hours – 40-45 hours/week. This is NOT an 8 to 5 job. We all leave when we get the job done.
7- Pay – will be commensurate and give raises based on your results, the talents, initiatives and motivation you bring to the position.
8- Acting as if you own the company – Again, you won’t have a manager. You will take initiative and ownership, make decisions with input from your team, think ahead and be proactive (we don’t need “reactive”). You will work with others to constantly make things better and deliver better veterinary services every day.
The things we can’t teach, that you must already have when you start:
• Great English (accent okay) and good writing skills – You’ll be emailing with doctors and clients, posting ads and posting on Social media.
• Outstanding work ethic – this is self-explanatory
• Self-motivated, self-managed stakeholder – everyone in our company is self-managed – Did we mention - YOU WON'T HAVE A MANAGER? We work very closely as a team, so we all have great support, and everyone leads from their areas of expertise.
• Excellent relational skills – not party-animal emotionalism (although being genuinely excited is fine) but great people-sense. You know how to talk to just about anyone, can pick up the phone and speak to clients, vendors and stakeholders as if they were your good friend.
• Strong attention to detail – Can you follow every step in a process? Better yet, can you create a process? Are you great at follow up and making sure things get done when they need to? This ad is long for a reason. If you’re thinking it’s too long instead of thinking it’s great to get all the details about this company and this job, this isn’t the position for you. We don’t need to see your resume yet. Please do not send it. And please do not call. For now, just email us answers to the following questions:
1.How is this position a fit for you, and what would you get out of working in the environment described here?
2.What is your reaction to our Values, Vision, and Mission statements?
3.How can we support you – what do you need from us to be successful?
4.What makes you want to get out of bed and come to work day after day?
5.Why don’t you need a manager?
6.How will you make our team better?
7.List the top three things, in order of impact that you would bring to the game.
The following is an Offer Letter we would love to be able to send to you: October xx, 2018
Dear great team member (we look forward to inserting your name here), I can’t tell you how thrilled we are to have you joining our team. Thanks for being willing to jump in and make a difference in the lives of pet owners, and to be part of a team committed to being transformative in the world around us. I just wanted to put in writing how we want to approach having you work with us. Employee vs. Stakeholder No one is an “employee” (closely managed child). Everyone is a Stakeholder (self-managed adult), and we’ll all have equal voices in where we go as a company and how we interact as a team. Your voice is as important as everyone else’s. You will be part of our monthly company leadership meetings and we expect you to be an equal contributor with others.
We do have regular work hours and want to get things done but whenever possible, we’ll work around family and personal life, because that is why we’re all doing this. Please don’t hesitate to speak up when work collides with home in an unhelpful way. We are sold out and we’re all in, so that we can have a life, too.
We’re a team and we’ll help each other be successful. No rugged individualists. We aren’t co-dependent, and we’re not completely independent. We’ll be more inter-dependent. We all help each other out as needed.
We will avoid these as much as possible. We will be driven by RESULTS REQUIRED, not by the process of getting there. All of us should have a very clear idea of the results we personally are responsible for, and which results the team is responsible for, and then we figure out how to build the processes that will best get us those results. Our Freedom Maps will guide how we contribute on a daily basis (we should all find ourselves on the maps), but our focus will be on getting results.
Nobody works for anybody, everyone works for everyone. We’re a team. That’s not chaos, and that doesn’t mean there isn’t hierarchy, but hierarchy is very deemphasized. Everyone will work for the self-directed, self- managed team, and the team will “manage” us.
Everyone deserves a regular raise – they just need to go find it (take on more responsibility, save us money, make us money, be incredible, etc.) This may sound fuzzy, but the sky is the limit. Please note that we want to encourage each of us to make the team more successful, so team compensation will be important.
Decision-making is one of the most important ways we all express ownership. Whenever possible, decisions should be made
a) by those who are affected, and
b) by those who will have to carry them out.
Whoever is affected by a decision should have a voice in it. Whenever possible, everyone affected by a decision will have a voice in that decision, and whenever possible, we’ll go with the overwhelming majority. No one person can decide if someone is hired or let go – usually it will be as many people as possible. No one individual can hire or fire you. The team hires, the team defines results desired, the team trains and mentors, and the team as a whole would decide if someone needed to go. You will be part of that team.
We’re fanatic about being owners of our tasks, functions, responsibilities, processes, teamwork and company contribution. Everybody thinks and acts like an owner. We are all encouraged to lead the company into whatever next thing we ought to be doing, and those who do will be compensated for doing so. If somebody invents the sticky note here, they will own some to a lot of it, not just get a thank you written on a sticky note. Owners make more time and money for making good things happen. We are all owners in that regard.
