The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) is seeking an Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME), an international, peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively and comprehensively to veterinary medical education. The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) provides leadership and strategic vision for the journal and is expected to maintain the journal’s standard of excellence and continue to build its reputation as essential reading for the academic veterinary medical community in the U.S. and abroad. The EIC has full authority over the editorial content of each issue of the journal, including the evaluation, selection and editing of individual articles. The EIC must ensure that the conditions under which the JVME operates, especially in terms of fiscal structure and staffing, meet those defined by AAVMC. The EIC must uphold AAVMC’s policies and positions, including our Principles of Inclusion.
The EIC is responsible for implementing and applying the editorial policies of the journal, for maintaining a high level of quality in the review and editing process, and for applying ethical standards of scholarly publishing. Toward that end, the EIC provides leadership in building and maintaining an extensive pool of reviewers of high quality, and in continuous improvement strategies designed to build the quality and expertise of that group. The EIC works closely with the Editorial Board (EB) on a wide variety of topics related to the overall direction of the journal. Examples may include, but not limited to, identification of “Theme Issue” topics and solicitation, and periodic review of manuscript management aspects, such as keywords, and manuscript types. The EIC is responsible for selecting members of the Editorial Board, managing and utilizing the EB, soliciting and selecting material for publication, setting and maintaining standards of journalistic excellence, and arranging for reviews of selected manuscripts based on reviewers’ comments and his/her own recommendations for improvement (e.g., clarity, development of ideas, scholarly accuracy, overall quality and compliance with publication guidelines).
The EIC reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AAVMC. The EIC will serve a five-year term, subject to annual review. The term is renewable at the discretion of the CEO. The expected level of effort is approximately 25% FTE (full-time equivalent) and a stipend is provided. A limited amount of travel is required, and travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with AAVMC’s Travel Policy.
The EIC chairs all meetings of the Editorial Board and represents the JVME at professional meetings. The EIC will prepare an annual report to the AAVMC Board of Directors summarizing the activities of the prior year and outlining future plans.
Graduate or professional degree
Extensive experience with peer-reviewed publication
Proven editorial judgment and writing ability
Budget management and supervisory experience
Experience working in an academic community or at an organization representing higher education
Telecommuting is allowed.
