CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE

No overnights, weekends, or holidays

The Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications from emergency veterinarians interested in providing high quality emergency medicine to client-owned animals in a dynamic academic setting at the Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC ER service and ICU is open 24 hours, 365 days a year and is staffed by Criticalists, an ER Clinical instructor, Emergency/Critical Care residents, and Small Animal Rotating interns. Multiple members of the technical staff have their Emergency and Critical Care specialty certification.

The VMC ER service is closely integrated with the VMC's team of 60 specialists in 15 different disciplines, and associated with renowned clinical researchers, and some of the most advanced veterinary diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities in the world. The VMC is one of the largest and busiest veterinary teaching hospitals in the nation, serving close to 45,000 cases a year.

Position details: This position is a full-time, non-tenure, contract appointment with the title of Clinical Instructor. Responsibilities include primary emergency case receiving in conjunction with the other service clinicians, clinical instruction of veterinary students and assisting small animal rotating interns. This emergency clinician position will consist of 10-hour shifts (with time built in for record writing/supervision) and vary between 3 and 4 days weekly.  These scheduled shifts will be weekday afternoon or evenings, with no overnights, weekend or holiday shifts. The schedule is subject to change after biannual schedule reevaluation. This will allow an improved quality of life over typical emergency clinician positions by providing a non-standard emergency schedule with the added benefits of being associated with an academic center.  Opportunities for advanced learning include the option to attend ECC resident rounds, journal club and/or shadowing with critical care, medicine, cardiology, surgery, anesthesiology, radiology and oncology. There is no required didactic teaching or research responsibilities for this position, but an interest in clinical teaching and learning is desired.

Essential qualifications include a DVM/VMD or equivalent foreign degree and a minimum of 2 years of small animal emergency experience, or completion of a 1-year rotating internship program.  We encourage individuals committed to high quality patient care, excellence in customer service and an interest in clinical teaching to apply. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, and includes an excellent fringe benefits package including a generous signing bonus and a moving allowance equal to one month’s salary.
