Veterinary Career Center

Calling all future veterinarians and veterinary dentists!  Please join us as part of your training in becoming a world class veterinarian.  We are a 2 hospital privately run practice group located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago offering externship opportunities for current veterinary students.  Your externship will consist of spending one-on-one time with each of our experienced doctors offering mentorship in every aspect of general practice, including client communication, outpatient case management, hospitalization, surgery, general dentistry, as well as dental specialty and business management.  We practice high quality advanced medicine, while providing compassionate care to the cherished small town communities we serve.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:

Veterinary externs will spend time in both our locations (Barrington Animal Hospital/Dental Referral Service in Barrington, Illinois and Animal Care Center in Buffalo Grove, Illinois). 

• 2 to 8 week externships available
• Each week will consist of rotations through the different departments
  • General Practice Appointments – developing treatment plans for wellness appointments, providing care and plans for sick patients, and communicating with staff and clients as well as writing medical reports for outpatients
  • Surgery – review preoperative care plans, place IV catheters, review bloodwork, scrub in and learn surgery, and provide post operative monitoring plans and reports.
  • Dental consults – (optional) for more dental experience, shadow the board certified dentist and resident in seeing consults to learn more about dental specialty cases
  • Dental procedures – (optional) assist with procedures such as root canals, vital pulpotomies, mass removals and jaw fracture repairs
  • Business management – (optional) learn more about business management, financing, human resources, and general day to day tasks of running a business
• Housing available
• Weekly stipend provided
• Hands on training with experienced doctors, dental specialists, and practice owners

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Our externs are current veterinary students interested in small animal practice and dental specialty who are also enthusiastic and possess a drive to learn and excel in their field.  We treat our externs as members of our team who maintain the high quality medicine and standards of our practices.  Our externs will be:

• Currently enrolled in an accredited DVM program
• Authorized to work in the United States
• Insured with professional liability insurance (provided free of charge by AVMA PLIT – please consult their website avmaplit.com/products/student-liability/

ABOUT US:

We are a group of 2 privately owned hospitals in the northwest suburbs of Chicago with 1 goal – to connect with the community by setting a new standard of care.  Barrington Animal Hospital has been serving the community since 1906.  Next year, we are moving to a brand new 13,000sf facility that will include a full service hospital equipped with the newest technology, extensive dental suite and introducing new services such as boarding, grooming and daycare.  The Animal Care Center of Buffalo Grove just opened in July 2021 in a brand new building and includes a full service hospital and grooming.  We take great care in our service to the local community and are proud to share our insight in to the industry with new veterinarians.
