The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Internal Medicine with a primary emphasis in Companion Animal Endocrinology and Endocrine Oncology.

The position is for a full-time Tenure System faculty appointment at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The successful applicant will work alongside 4 other faculty members in the MSU Small Animal Internal Medicine Service. The applicant will also work closely with members of the internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology services that have shared interests in endocrine oncology to help build an endocrine oncology caseload that will further both clinical and research endeavors. Clinical, research and teaching assignments will be tailored to the desires and qualifications of the applicant, with a general expectation for an approximate 30-50% clinical service commitment. A substantial component of the the applicant’s research program should ideally be devoted to endocrinology or endocrine oncology.

The MSU Veterinary Medical Center is a state-of-the-art and AAHA accredited facility, and it is equipped with GI, pulmonary and genitourinary endoscopic equipment, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, and on-site MRI and nuclear medicine, amongst other equipment and capabilities. The small animal internal medicine team at MSU consists of 4 faculty members, 6 residents, and 3 technicians. Other specialties are also well-represented in the MSU Veterinary Medical Center and include surgery (both soft tissue and orthopedics), emergency and critical care medicine, cardiology, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, dermatology, ophthalmology, rehabilitation, and diagnostic imaging.

There are numerous opportunities to lead or engage in endocrine-related research and partner with experts across a wide spectrum of disciplines. The Endocrinology Section of the Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has been on the forefront of diagnostic endocrinology for decades, and many collaborations exist between members of the diagnostic lab and internal medicine service. Michigan State University also has two human medical schools on campus providing unique and exciting opportunities for collaborative activities. Beyond this, researchers at the University of Michigan Endocrine Oncology Unit, located in Ann Arbor, have strong interests in adrenal and thyroid cancer and have previously partnered with faculty at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Such research activities and collaborations are encouraged at both the Departmental and College level, and support is available for grant writing, locating external funding resources, and processing grant submissions. Internal funding opportunities are also available through endowed research funds. The College of Veterinary Medicine has active faculty development and mentorship programs to facilitate career progression, especially in the research arena.

Another important aspect of the position will be to assist in the education of the next generation of veterinary clinicians and clinician scientists, and there will be ample opportunities to participate in the didactic and clinical teaching of veterinary students and house officers.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan. Board certification in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or the  European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is desired, although board-eligible candidates will be considered.  The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a team.

Desired Qualifications

An advanced research degree or focused research experience in the fields of endocrinology and/or endocrine oncology will also be favorably considered.
