Internship-trained or experienced emergency doctors wanted for a combination position at Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services (BSVESS) in Swansea, MA, and Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS), a large and busy 24 hour emergency and specialty referral center located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. The main hospital is a 26,000 sq. ft, with dedicated emergency and specialty centers that serves RI, eastern CT, and southern MA. There is no general practice associated with the hospitals. Equipment includes digital radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, laparoscopy, mechanical ventilation, telemetry, fluoroscopy, and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. The staff includes specialists in internal medicine, surgery, radiology, emergency/critical care, cardiology, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology and avian/exotics, as well as a large group of experienced emergency clinicians. The MA hospital is primarily a 24 hour emergency center, but there is a full time surgeon and internists are there four days a week. The clinics are only 20 minutes apart.
The hospitals place a premium on continuing education. Daily case rounds ensure excellence in case management through collaborative discussion and provide an opportunity for continuous learning. There is in-house education for staff doctors, technicians, and referring veterinarians. We have a highly respected internship as well as emergency/critical care and surgical residencies, which helps to promote a didactic atmosphere and gives the emergency clinicians and specialists ample opportunity for teaching as well as personal professional growth. The support staff is highly trained and enthusiastic about continuing education as well. The technicians working in the intensive care unit are capable of managing most nursing cases, including those on mechanical ventilation, peritoneal dialysis, continuous thoracic drainage, etc.
This position offers emergency clinicians a unique opportunity to work in a well-equipped, state-of-the-art facility, side-by-side with a large group of specialists. The emergency doctors do not just work evenings and weekends, they work many weekday inpatient shifts as well, giving them the opportunity to manage critical care patients and benefit from the referral hospital environment. The emergency clinicians can choose whether to work at both hospitals, or choose to stay at one location. The MA location will be moving into a large state-of-the-art facility in the spring on 2024. The RI location is undergoing expansion as well, adding a large new intensive care unit as well as office and teaching space. The desire to continue learning and to participate in the teaching of interns and student externs is very important, and a good sense of humor is essential!
The caseload at both hospitals is high, and the cases challenging, but the culture is positive and supportive. We are a proud partner of United Veterinary care and the teams at both hospitals know that what we value are excellent medicine, excellent patient care, and our excellent staff. This is a tremendous environment to continue learning and growing but requires someone with a strong ER foundation. Compensation is a base salary plus production, and benefits include health insurance, 401K, CE, and all licenses and professional memberships required to practice here. If you have questions about the hospital or position, reach out directly to Dr. Justine Johnson: jjohnson@osvs.net.
