We are seeking a Lead Veterinarian for the Northwest Spay & Neuter Center which provides spay, neuter, wellness and dentistry services to income qualified homes and local animal welfare agencies. Northwest Spay & Neuter Center is the largest spay and neuter center in Washington state providing over 15,000 surgeries and over 3,500 wellness exams per year.

What you’ll be doing:
- Staff Development
- Lead, train, coach, schedule, and problem-solve medical support staff, encouraging a collaborative and kind working environment.
- Assist the Director of Veterinary Services in the development of new programs and maintenance of current practices, medical support staff, and volunteer training programs.
- Prepare, review, verify and maintain proper records of work performance and timekeeping of medical support staff and clinic operations.
- Clinic Operations
- Lead medical support team in providing, and regularly perform, high-quality high-volume spay, neuter, wellness and dentistry services. Guide and perform exams, inductions, surgeries, anesthesia, dental x-rays and prophylaxis, anesthetic recovery, and preventative medicine.
- Support and promote Fear Free and similar animal handling practices within the clinic.
- Supervise the euthanasia and or euthanize animals as to AVHS policy (infrequent).
- Maintain proper records of animal care, medical charting and record-keeping in-line with current standards of care.
- Oversee the scheduling of surgical, wellness, and dentistry appointments.
- Manage and perform all services and requirements associated with site-specific controlled drug administration, in accordance with DEA licensure.
- Program Management
- Assist the Director of Veterinary Services with development and implementation of an annual business plan, strategic plan, and budget to include, but not limited to, strategies to increase productivity and efficiency within the clinic and promote AVHS workplace culture.
- Prepare monthly and annual departmental reports as they relate to program metrics.
- Evaluate the risks associated with each program and take appropriate action to mitigate the risks associated with the program.
- Create program materials (policies and procedures, applications, handbooks, trainings, etc.).
- Regularly audit and evaluate programs to ensure clinic medical programs are targeted appropriately.
What you’ll need to be successful (minimum requirements):
- Licensing:
- DVM; licensed to practice in the State of Washington.
- Current or eligible for DEA licensure.
- Valid driver’s license with access to reliable transportation; ability to meet AVHS insurance requirements and appropriately operate AVHS vehicles in accordance with policy.
- Veterinarian Experience:
- HQHVSN, dentistry and/or shelter environment experience.
- Ability to handle and assess potentially dangerous or fractious dogs and cats.
- Proficient (or willing and able within one year) in all aspects of high quality, high volume, spay & neuter (HQHVSN), dentistry, and the knowledge and delivery of preventative medicine topics and care based on organizational policy.
- Leadership:
- Demonstrated experience in leading a diverse staff in a positive, friendly, collaborative, and inclusive manner.
- Ability to engage with animals and humans who may be having a hard day with a commitment to quality care.
- Strong communication skills to demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, tact, compassion, and sound judgment to your coworkers and community members.
- Strong interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
- Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures.
- Working Conditions:
- Available outside of regularly scheduled hours in a leadership role promoting support staff and operational success.
- Able to work flexible hours, which may include weekends and some evenings.
- Proficiency with Microsoft and clinic software programs; able to use effectively and guide others when needed.
- Frequent ability to stand, walk or sit for extended periods of time; hear sufficiently; reach, bend, or stoop, regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- This position works daily in a spay, neuter, wellness, and surgery clinic. This position will come in direct contact with animals and will be exposed to animal related smells and sounds.

- Experience with shelter software (ClinicHQ).
- Multiple years of HQHVSN, dentistry and/or shelter environment experience.
- Supervisory experience; especially of teams >20.
- Experience opening / starting a new operation or location.
- Program development experience.
