The U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture is seeking a Director of Veterinary Services. The Director of Veterinary Services regulates, protects, promotes and provides veterinary care for the livestock industry of the USVI. The Director regulates all import and export movements of livestock, horses, birds and pets from and into the territory under the regulations of the VI Code and Federal Code. He/She provides medical, surgical and emergency field services for the farm animal population of the territory as well as consults with and assists farmers and stakeholders in the development of preventative health programs. He/She coordinates and implements federal agriculture programs (USDA APHIS) locally including grant writing, supply and equipment procurement and maintenance, reporting of activities, hiring and supervision of staff and implementation of duties and responsibilities outlined in the program work plan. The Director partners with local health officials as a health resource in the planning, training and preparation for disease disaster planning. He/She organizes and implements livestock health seminars and educational outreach activities in cooperation with other agricultural organizations and government and university agencies. He/She also investigates livestock abuse and neglect cases under the authority of the VI Code and with assistance of local animal welfare organizations.
The US Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture was created pursuant to Title 3, Chapter 17, Section 291. Act Number 5265 repealed this Section and established the Department of Economic Development and Agriculture and in 1995, Act No. 5265 as amended by Act. No. 6070, abolished the Department of Economic Development and Agriculture and created two separate entities, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Tourism. The Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture develops, supports, and promotes an economically lucrative agricultural industry in the US Virgin Islands while supporting farmers, consumers, and the environment.
