Merrick Animal Hospital is a well-established, privately owned, full-service veterinary hospital located in Brookfield, Illinois. Our dedicated two-doctor team provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for small animals, focusing on high-quality medicine, preventative care, and client education.
We pride ourselves on maintaining a positive, collaborative workplace where veterinarians can practice medicine their way—without corporate restrictions—while enjoying a healthy work-life balance. Our clinic is fully equipped with an in-house laboratory, digital radiography, digital dental radiography, ultrasound, therapy laser, and computerized medical records, allowing us to deliver advanced, efficient, and compassionate care.
Each doctor works with a dedicated veterinary assistant and technician for optimal patient support. We offer flexible scheduling, no emergency or on-call duties, and a fun, supportive team environment where hard work is recognized and growth is encouraged.

Company History
Founded in 1934 by Dr. Andy Merrick, a veterinary graduate of Ohio State University, with a small storefront practice in Brookfield, IL, at age 24. By 1937, Dr. Merrick built a 5,000 sq ft facility, later dubbed “Andy’s Taj Mahal” by his peers—modern, ambitious, and ahead of its time.
Dr. John Merrick, his son, joined the practice in 1954 after earning his veterinary degree, though he eventually pursued veterinary work in Wisconsin
In 1968, Dr. Andy Merrick retired and sold the practice to Dr. Ted Fitch, who continued its legacy of small-animal care and local service
In 1995 Dr. Jeff Weiser acquired the practice from Dr. Fitch, leading the hospital into the modern era
In 2008 Dr. James Hosek, who had trained under Dr. Fitch and had grown up in the local community, purchased Merrick Animal Hospital. When he tragically passed away in 2023, his long time practice manager and mentee, Jenny Massie, CVT purchased the practice and currently owns it with Medical Director, Nathan Horowitz, DVM.
Throughout its history—now in operation for **over 90 years**—the hospital has evolved into a full-service veterinary facility offering diagnostics, surgery, laser therapy, ultrasound, and even stem-cell treatments, all while retaining its community?focused, family practice ethos.
