Position Overview:

This position functions primarily out of our Shelter at 610 ES 11th St, Abilene, TX 79602.
Animal Care Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement strategic plans to enhance medical care, setting clear goals and objectives aimed at increasing lifesaving efforts and disease reduction in the shelter.
- Coordinate medical care with the animal care teams to ensure animals have been spayed/neutered (if age-appropriate) and all preventative medicine has been completed.
- Assess animals’ appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease, discontent and take necessary action as appropriate.
- Utilize and train technicians on animal handling skills to ensure a safe and friendly environment for the animals and team members, preventing bites, scratches and workplace injury.
- Adequately perform high volume surgery-Primarily spay/neuter with the potential for soft tissue or orthopedic surgeries. High volume is recognized as 30+ surgeries per day.
- Administer vaccines, microchips, and medications and perform minor testing as needed.
- Monitor Shelterluv to stay on top of who needs to receive medical care or be re-vaccinated and ensure all animals receive vaccinations or medical care in a timely manner.
- Input data into Shelterluv (software management system).
- Coordinate with partner vet clinics and veterinarians regarding procedures that are out of our scope. This position will be the main contact for external veterinary partners.
- Provide excellent customer service for citizens and partnering vet clinics in person, via email, and over the telephone.
- Provide exams, reports and expert eye witness statements for cases brought in by the Animal Outreach Team.
- Provide on-call support for team members in case of emergencies at the shelter.
- Perform other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Implement and ensure adherence to systems, policies and procedures and identify systems and processes that are ineffective and determine needed policy and operational changes, find solutions and implement new strategies.
- Ensure all records are complete and correct in ShelterLuv, including but not limited to animal treatments and medical care, location, attachments, photo and pertinent memos.
- Stay informed about industry best practices and trends in shelter welfare.
- Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to enhance the organization’s lifesaving efforts.
- Oversee direct reports, providing training, feedback, performance reviews and disciplinary action as required.
Compensation and Benefits: This position starts at $120,000 annually, dependent on experience. All Full-time associates are eligible for Health Insurance,PTO, Life Insurance and eligibility to participate in a 401k plan with potential employer contributions.
Reporting Relationships: This position directly reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Chief Operations Officer and Canine and Feline Managers. This position directly oversees the Veterinary Care Supervisor.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree.
- State Veterinary Board License.
- DEA License or the ability to obtain upon hire.
- Experience in diagnosing and treating medical conditions in dogs and cats required, experience with farmed animals and small animals a plus.
- Surgical skills, including spay, neuter, and soft tissue required, experience with orthopedic surgeries and treatment a plus.
- Minimum of one year experience in practice required, two+ preferred.
- Knowledge of common medications and their appropriate usage.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Attention to detail and excellent problem-solving abilities
- A passion for and a deep commitment to All Kind’s mission, animal welfare and for helping community members.
- Proficient with common computer software, experience with ShelterLuv a plus.
- Current Rabies Pre-Exposure vaccinations or current titer.
Work Environment and Physical Qualifications:
- Possible exposure to zoonotic diseases, bites, scratches, loud noises, animal waste, kennel cleaners and disinfectants, animal bedding, and dishes. Allergic conditions which would be aggravated when handling or working near/with felines may be a disqualification.
- Exposure to animal noise, unpleasant odors, cold, heat, outdoors, vibration and chemicals.
- Walking and/or standing at a surgery table for extended periods of time, often on wet surfaces. Ability to work in a bent over or squatting position.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
